Fashion Models and Ecdysiasts
Models who specialize in modeling swimwear are often drawn from two groups: One group are advertising and runway models who specialize in swimwear because they fit in the standard sizes of the trade, know how to pose, and know how to move on a runway. The other group is drawn from the rank of dance; these include dancers of the ballet and Broadway ilk as well as their compatriots in the strip club. Their specialty is movement, another important ingredient.
Although their can be and often is a great deal of interchange between these groups--many individuals flow seemlessly across the boundaries--the opposite is also true. Many high-fashion models and their agents worry about the more explicit displays of the ecdysiast; conversely many dancers like the process of movement, interaction, and approval that comes from being on a stage, and have no patience with the slower mechanics of photography. Sometimes they don't mind being naked in a club, but don't want to be seen dressed in a magazine.
The models herein come from across this broad spectrum, and like models everywhere bring a mixture of themselves and an willingness to be directed in order to explore ideas.
The aspirant bikini scientist is reminded that tomorrow's mainstream swimwear is often found in the burlesque tradition, and that ecdysiasts like Michele Bernadin have played staring roles in the invention and popularization of the bikini (LR4601).
Showgirls also illustrate the concept of relative modesty (LL5616); they have long contributed to the bikini long before there was a bikini. Another source of inspiration is the fetish model. This is a rare early glimpse at a nipple shield (NP8110) and horseshoe barbell (NP8112). And this fetish costume completely covers the model except for the belly cutout (T96A11).
In the 1990s it is again the dancer and performance artist who presents some the newer, wilder costumes like the torpedo, worn here by Amy Fireeater (SR9411), Brianna (CSA2D0BS), Dayna (WK9546BS), Kelly Webb (KA93C0), and also with her friend Annie (KA93F5-G5). Dayna also demonstrates a pasties and sideless combination (WK9554BS). And Kelly demonstrates what is called a maillot I-front (KA93E0BS), as well as a cross-tension maillot (KA93F0BS).
