Diocletian, Rome, Italy c. 500 BC BB500BC4 Costume Clothed and nude. N/a. Actions The gigantic Diocletian Baths in Rome feature a multi-story enclosed space supported by columns and arches, as seen in this cutaway view (1). Commentary This cutaway reconstruction shows the empire scale of construction and the social interaction of people at the ultra-elaborate Diocletian baths complex. This bath complex is known not simply for its massive size, but for its complex and subterranean heating elements beneath the entire floor, and for its system of sewers.
