Hollywood, CA c. 1930 CL3010 Costume Criss-cross halter connected to dance shorts and open skirt. Alternatively, a criss-cross maillot cutout with an open skirt. TML. Actions Ms. Lombard poses midway through a dance step, the arms showing partial armpits, and a bare knee cocked out the skirt (1). Commentary Ms. Lombard bares her belly as she breaks into a competitive feature film environment. This is de rigeur for a star these days. Note the panels and corseting in the panty-shorts, and an early deployment of the criss-cross halter--admittedly probably connected to the culotte, but noteworthy in that it is dance theater. One of the Bikini Science hypothesis is that costumes migrate from the dance theater to the beach. Most of the top variations are found there, including this rather rare one. Other examples include the deux-pièces, the bikini line, and the g-string. Source "Posed by Carol Lombard, Paramount Player." Charles B. Warwick, Scrapbook Collection, Vols I-V, 1928-1933.
