Seashore, Maryland June 1964 MD6410-16 Costume Maillots, some with shirts layered overtop, some with shorts overtop. White and blue bra and panty deux-pièces. TL, L. TML. Actions Hard surf pounds the beach on a gray day in early June. "That's Eve wearing the black maillot and striped shorts, coming up from the surf (1), and that's Harry--her husband--adjusting her white rubber swim cap (2) and helping her on with a yellow slicker (3). And there's Auntie Jan in her black maillot and white straw hat, my goodness, she's playing Frisbee (4)! It must be windy 'cause she has her hat tied on with a red ribbon or something (5). Such spirt. "It must be Uncle Dan taking the pictures--there's a family building a sand castle (6); it looks chilly out here today (7). Dan always had an eye for the ladies--there's a young blonde walking past, and she's got a shirt over her maillot to help keep her warm (8). And the woman flying the kite also has a shirt over her maillot (9). I have not idea who the woman with shorts is reclining behind a fence (10). It's definitely Dan taking the pictures, he sure didn't miss these two girls in deux-pièces walking past (11); I bet Dan had that sneaky laugh to himself when he snapped those two (12)! "Jan and Dan, Eve and Harry. They were in the prime of their lives this day. Three of them we see how they look, one of them we see how he looked. But that's all we have; they're all gone now." Commentary Despite the realm of the media, the real beach is conservative, with the wives wearing maillots, and the prowling young girls clad not even in bikinis, but reserved deux-pièces. This is not Cannes. Source Dan Martin, estate sale, 1998. 12 pictures. |
