Hollywood, California c. 1927 CB2L60-62 Costume White cotton-fleece maillot pantaloon with pattern top left. Heels, polka-dot head scarf, wide-brimmed sombrero hat, gun holster and pistol. Surfboard. TL. Headlights. Actions Clara Bow hauls a surfboard 40 years before the Beach Boys; the board and the swimsuit speak to youth and a beach culture (1). She sits (2), and in a most complex and conversational shot leans forward and displays headlights (3). The addition of a sombrero and gun belt add elements. There have been many interpretations of what these looks mean, somewhere between, "Wanna date?" and "Stick 'em up!" (4, 5). Commentary Bow captures most advancements of the maillot throughout the late 1920. This one piece is tightly fitted, and is made with one seam up the side. It is a maillot pantaloon and not a tank.
