Maillot Sheathed The maillot sheathed gets its named from a narrow modesty panel that covers the front of the crotch. Its is markedly similar to the maillot skirted except that the skirt in the back is missing. The sheath can combine with any strap arrangement including shoulder straps, the neck strap, or the strapless. The Maillot Reduces The sheath evolves in the early 1940s as the leg art of the pinup comes into full swing, and as attention switches to the buttocks. One of the most famous pinups of the Second World War is Betty Grable wearing a shoulder strap maillot with long straps, largely bare back, and a zipper and seam that contours the buttocks--independently. Related Species Always lurking during this period is the maillot skirtless herein classified as the maillot tank. For although Grable's backline nowhere resembles the high back of her predecessors, with their button on the tops of the straps, it is this core silhouette around which all other dances. |
