Pool December 1986 V8612 Costume Topless and Giorgio di Sant'Angeleo green g-string ($55). TMLBA. Actions This model runs past the camera and is frozen with her feet in the air (1). Her bare breasts are visible, but her bare butt is partially hidden. Writes Vogue about a new theme in resort/hot weather dressing: "A new system of dressing starts with a maillot, bikini, or thong as a base, and builds up from exciting swimwear to new day/night looks." In the example here Vogue advocates starting with "the smallest piece," a spandex "tanga or thong" and then complemented this with "a strapless spandex tube [a bandeau], a wrap-around towel, or a wider tube drafted as a miniskirt." Commentary A rare topless in Vogue, in which they try (and fail) to advance American customs to European values in a very Mediterranean setting. The first time a tanga went topless in Vogue was in 1981 (V8106); the most recent tanga doesn't even show the backside (V8605). Vogue will feature a maillot tanga next year (V8701) and again attempt a topless tanga (V8705), but as the 80s progress they abandon both Topless and g-string, even though this silhouette catches on with some of the younger crowd, and becomes popular in Europe with women of all ages.
