Commentary The crest of the ilium is the critical body landmark revealed in this picture. The ilium is the top part of the pelvic bone which lies to the front and sides and which defines the widest part of the body immediately below the waistline. In Bikini Science the uncovering of the ilium occures as the waistline descends downward toward the pubic hair, creating an increasingly unstable culotte, and it occurs in the reverse, when the legline marches upward in the early 1980s.
