Commentary
The advertising copy accompanying this ad, and an inset showing the back of he swimsuit, provides significant details to the Bikini Scientist. Yes, the "upper and trunks" are connected by a fastener, possibly including a zipper, which "permits precise adjustment of the brassiere," although in Bikini Science parlance this top would not be called a brassiere but something derivative of a halter. The narrow string halter strap is also innovative.
It is also significant to note the the combination comes a "half skirt in front [as shown] or skirtless," providing an option as to the two major trends of the day re the legline. Note that the copy suggests that the skirt is only in front, which if true qualifies the maillot as a sheath according to Bikini Science classification.
It is ironic but probably not entirely coincidental that the silhouette here is almost identical to that of Jantzen's Topper for men (JZ3350). The Topper, introduced in 1933, provides for a detachable top for men, and at a time when there is a trend for men to go bare-chested. This suit also provides a similar, but unstated, option.
