Actions Irish-born Maureen O'Sullivan arrives in Hollywood in 1930. In 1932 she signs a contract with MGM and co-stars with Olympic gold medal swimming star Johnny Weissmuller in Tarzan the Ape Man. The movie is a huge success and launches a series of Tarzan movies featuring the sexiest couple in the jungle. These images of Tarzan and Jane are believed to be from the second Tarzan movie, Tarzan and His Mate, released in 1934 (1, 2, 3) Weissmuller chest is shaven and he wears but a loincloth (4, 5, 6). O'Sullivan's costume for the movie is a most revealing two-piece croptop and side-tie loincloth that leaves little to the imagination and which will represent the apex of Jane exposures (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18). The leather bra is laced together at the front and the sides and the loincloth and back flap appear to hang from a waistband, baring a wide expanse of hip, and apparently oblivious of any internal structure (19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24). Weissmuller's chest is shaven and both waistlines engage the navel. The picture includes a scene of Jane trying on hose (25) including a silhouette nude (26). O'Sullivan's top is prone to show off her natural cleavage (27, 28) as well as her natural parts (29, 30). Not untypical of the pre-Hayes code period the original production of the movie includes scenes with Jane topless as well as a nude underwater swimming scene, but this is cut from the picture due to complaints from religious groups. Although O'Sullivan's skimpy costume suggests the ravishing Irish beauty is not shy about showing her body, the underwater nudes are performed by body double and Olympic swimmer Josephine McKim in order to provide a graceful quality to the images. These have been restored to the movie when the picture was rereleased for DVD distribution in 1986. You can differentiate McKim by her smaller breast size; it is uncertain if the nude Jane diving into the water and emerging from it after the skinny dip is Ms. McKim or Ms. O'Sullivan (31, 32). Commentary "Maureen O'Sullivan, as Jane, projects superb femininity in beautiful contrast to Johnny Weissmuller's infallible masculinity in his role as the famed jungle lord," writes Val Warren in Lost Lands. But by the late 1930s the Hays Code is about the exert a major influence on Jane's costume, and the next time Tarzan and Jane make a movie the Hayes Code ensures Jane is more covered up (TJ3910-30).
