Faux Beach, France c. 1923 EK2E10BS Costume Colored strapped maillot pantaloons. Hats, strappy shoes. Note the shoulder strap buttons. TL. Actions Bathing beauties lounge on the faux beach and in the studio (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). Commentary The bathing beauty, or bathing belle, is a genre of pinup that emerges after the First World War and competes with more undressed topless or nude pinup, although many of the same models pose for both. The French bathing beauty defines a slightly ahead-of-its time swimsuit, characterized by its absence of skirt, bare arms, absence of hose (but retaining shoes), and fluctuation of legline--from above the knee to below the crotch--but always pantalooned.
