Les Baigneuses Painted Maillot Pantaloons

Seashore with Lighthouse, Europe
1918 PP1810

Costume
Blue and white stripped, red-orange, and purple strapped maillot pantaloons.

   TL. Armpits. Bare feet.

Actions
Three bathers enjoy a day on a rocky beach. The one in orange reclines, the one in purple sits and adjusts her hair, and the one in stripes stands and casts her hair (1).

Commentary
Painter Picasso treats these form-fitting swimsuits as if they are painted onto naked bodies. The precise date of the painting (1918) correlates to the swim costumes of the period. Picasso's models not only "wear" swimsuits that cling to their breasts, bellies, and buttocks, but they also go barefoot.
