A Pretty Pair Hide from the Sun

Faux beach, Possibly America
c. 1913 PC1E57

Costume
Orange sleevelss maillot skirted pantaloon with hose, shoes, and hat. Parasol.

   Bare arms.

Actions
A woman sits with her parasol in hand while a daughter sits on the sand next to her and lays her head and arm in her lap (1). Same with the border cropped off (2).

Commentary
This is an excellent example of a transition swimsuit, and one which can be classified as either a maillot skirted pantaloon or a bathing dress. We choose to identify it as a maillot species because the pantaloon is distinct. The fact that the leg is completely clad in hose and the fact the garment is only not completely form-fitting both evidence its bathing dress influences.
The mother-and-daughter theme signal mainstreaming; the maillot skirted pantaloon is headed for the family beach.
