Germany and America le. 1907 PC0720 Costume Brown with white trim bathing dress shortsleeved bloomered, with gray hose and white strappy shoes. Note collar and necktie. Face and arms. Actions This lovely brunette hangs and leans back onto a rope at the water's edge (1). Commentary It would be hard to find a more perfect example of the bathing dress shortsleeved bloomered than this the costume this lass is wearing. The postcard, manufactured in Germany for export to America, and sold and mailed in America, documents many details of the emergent bathing dress properly worn. The criss-cross laces on the shoes are typical, and possibly assist in keeping them on in the water. Note too the belt and narrow waist. The pose suggests a sexual openness, yet the upskirt view offers only bloomers. Although used in 1907, this silhouette has remained stable since the 1890s. Source Hand-tinted postcard, "'Gee' the Water's Fine," No. 1458, Post Card Co., made in Germany. Date is date of cancellation and is probably earlier.
