Faux Beach, France 1895 C189501 Costume Red fitted shoulder-strapped maillot pantaloon. Hat. TL. Offshoulders. Cleavage. Actions The "well endowed delightful delighted bather shown here" wades in the surf. Besides wearing a next-to-nothing swimsuit, a shoulder strap is falling off and as she braces the waves she shows off her goods (1). Commentary This is painted in 1895 by a successful magazine illustrator whom we also assume to be a commercial artist. But the swimsuit doesn't exist quite yet, but ideas like this will start to germinate in the early oughts.
