Bathers Surprised

Pond, England
1852-53 WM185210

Costume
   Nude.

   TMLBAP.

Actions
At a time when swimming has just been rediscovered, and the Victorian ocean bathing swimdress is in its early evolution, these three nude skinny-dippers are hailed by a mother and child and her companions (1).

Commentary
It is suggested that despite the very classical pose that the more natural pretext of this image--a mortal and not a God, allegorical or Biblical reference--changes the painting with a newfound sexuality.
