Trouville, France 1875 TF187510 Costume Women in formal long dresses and parasols. Men in long jackets and trousers. Girls in calf-length dresses, boys in jackets and trousers. Face and hands. Actions Sojourners at the "Hotel de la Mer" stroll down to the shoreline (1). The view is looking east, with the English Channel to our left. Commentary In an era that overlaps the beginning of photography, painting provides us with a view that is startling rich in color and details. Interestingly, the photography validates the paintings accuracy as to costumes and locations, and gives the paintings, like this one, more "truth." Source Charles Pecrus, "Hotel de la Mer."
