Bathing dress shortsleeved bloomered, with NO hose, shoes, hat. Bathing dress shortsleeved bloomerless, with NO hose, shoes, hat. Bathing dress sleeveless (bloomerless), with hose, shoes, hat. Bare arms and faces. L. Two models show bare legs! Actions These cheesecake models lift their skirts for a beach pose. Their heavier weight signals they predate the Gibson Girl, their short sleeves indicate they postdate 1890, and the second from the right and middle subjects lack of stockings demonstrate a certain, well, going over the line (1). Commentary In a single image these five pinup girls capture a spectrum of exposures circa 1900. Here we have legs covered with hose, legs with bloomers and hose, and uncovered legs, both with and without bloomers. Four cases all in one picture. Plus one model who shows cleavage and full bare arms. A good example of molting theory. Source Picture credited to the Museum of the City of New York, Fifth Ave and 103rd St., New York. Scanned from an unknown New York City newspaper, possibly the Post, circa 1990. 1 picture. |
