Egypt circa 48 BC 1866 JG186610 Costume Strapped undersupported and collared boobless cutout-bra; with belted harem skirt, slit to the waist to reveal both legs. Hair up and dressed. Sandels. TMLB. Subject is not "topless," but rather breasts and nipples protrude. N-2 bellage in a surprisingly 1960s waistline. Actions As a male slave gathers a rug around her feet Cleopatra exchanges a look of recognition with Caesar (1). A more detailed study of the costume (2). Commentary It is amazine to see bikini lines in these 1866 paintings of Jean-Léon Gérome, who combines classical themes and outrageous "orientalist" attire in his paintings. Compare to another famous "Egyptian" (LE189310). Source From Gerald M. Ackerman, Les Orientalistes: Jean-Léon Gérome, ACR Edition Internationale, Courbevoie, Paris, 1986, p. 70.
