Beach, Italy 1886 E188601 Costume Bathing dress shortsleeve middie bloomered, hats. Face and arms. Calf? Actions Women and children stand in the water with a row of changing room extending out into the water behind on a long pier (1). Commentary The era of ocean piers begins in the late 1800s. It is uncertain if these feet, ankles, and calves are bare or not, or if this is a mixed or segregated bathing area. But the bare legs, visible in the younger but not older women, are definately a focal point of this picture. Source Andre Bercoff, "O Nu Soit...," Elle, July 25, 1977. 1 picture. |
