Young Ladies in Bathing Wagons

Brighton, England
1820 E182001

Costume
Bathing dresses, longsleeved, shortsleeved and offshoulder, with hats and hose.

   None. T.

Actions
These young ladies sit inside a bathing wagon (bains chauds) as waves wash about the wheels. Other ladies splash about in the sea. Most of the bathing dresses are high necked but the lady sitting in the wagon is particularly salacious (1).

Commentary
Some of these bathing dresses are high necklined, others are off-shouldered. Note the bare legs on the lady sitting behind the open door. Perhaps inspired by the diving bell, these portables enclosures are rolled into the water, sometimes drawn by horses. Bathing wagons allow the fair sex privacy yet access to the ocean. Do not assume the bare legs would be viewed on a mixed beach.
